Travel Advice

I'm always being asked so many questions related to travel...how, where, what to do. So here are my thoughts. My intent is to post weekly. Sometimes just simple advice on travel. Sometimes pictures from far off places. I've stayed in accommodations ranging from a tent in the African bush to luxury hotels and everywhere in between.

And perhaps the most frequent place I can be found. 30,000 feet in the air, usually asleep on the plane! Come along for the journey. I promise to offer answers to some travel questions, lots of amazing travel photos, a sneak peak into some amazing places, people, cultures and cuisines. I'll give you recommendations of what to do (and avoid) in cities around the world.

Ciao!

  2. Robin, love the blog site! I want advice on how to get comfortable and be able to sleep sitting up on long domestic flights. Do you have a neck pillow or such that you particularly like/use?

    1. I wish I had an easy answer. I suppose I'm a bit spoiled, as much of my travel is now international and there is a huge difference in comfort levels. For domestic flights, I try to avoid the red-eye flights at all costs. While I can usually be found sound asleep, most times before even leaving the runway on a morning or afternoon flight (just ask anyone who's travelled with me...I'm not great company if you want someone to chat with. zzz) but it seems on overnight flights I always struggle with solid sleep. I personally don't use neck rolls. I suppose if you have the space to take a fluffy pillow from home it may help (but that's not me either). If you fly coach, grab a window seat so you can at least lean against the window. First class is great for roominess but you're almost too far from the window to lean against. And there's always the option of a sleeping pill (Again, I personally never take but that's not to say it wouldn't be a good idea). Sorry not more help on that one!

  3. Thanks for the advice on sleep. Do you typically eat the airline food? Any airlines better than others?

  4. The international carriers tend to have better food than domestic carriers, though US Air doesn't have bad food on international flights. I will typically take the dinner, though it depends on the time. If its 11pm, I just want to sleep. I always pass on breakfast. I tell them not to wake me. Just not worth it. Those who know me well, know I like wine and I generally find the wine selections on flights are too bad. BUT....I never drink on the plane. Water only and keep it coming. Only on a rare and special occasion if traveling with a close friend for a special trip, do I break that rule and toast to a good trip. but in general, I avoid all alcohol on planes. I also stay away from soda. Water only, keeping well hydrated. Lots of sleep. And change your watch to match your destination and never look back (except for emergency calls). Adjust quickly to your new time and jet lag won't be an issue.
